Day 57: What are phytonutrients and how do we get them?

Phytonutrients are the natural plant chemicals which give plants their characteristics and many health benefits. For example, lycopene is the phytonutrient in tomatoes which give them their red color. Adequate levels of lycopene have been shown in multiple published studies to protect men from prostate cancer. When someone tells you to not consume tomatoes because of their acidity or some similar reason, they are oversimplifying the vast benefits of many healthy nutrients and not considering nutrigenetics. The best food advice will come from someone with a deep understanding of many fields of science and not just a peripheral or simple view. It’s those simple recommendations which lead to confusion. Day 58: What is epigenetics and how does Mediterranean Diet positively impact it?

There are proteins called histones which sit on top of the DNA and control whether or not a gene can be operable just based upon how the histones tightly pack or make it available to be utilized. These proteins sit on top of the DNA and the science that studies all of this is called epigenetics. These histones are influenced by many food components and positively influenced by caloric restriction and the Mediterranean Diet. This is just another reason why the Mediterranean diet has been associated with longevity and decreased chronic disease and why we based our Makkarios M2 Diet on the Mediterranean Diet. Day 59: What is an anti-inflammatory diet and what is it based upon?

Scientific studies have been reviewed in 2017 involving 134k people and found that diets highest in inflammatory food intake was associated with the greatest risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and death. An anti-inflammatory diet was created using the Mediterranean Diet as its basis. Repeatedly, analyzing the most verifiable published diet research in the world from many different points of view and fields of science, they repeatedly show that the most researched diet associated with longevity and decreased chronic disease is the Mediterranean diet and that’s why it is the foundation of the i60 Day Challenge and the Makkarios M2 Diet. Because of recent processing and farming practices, we have needed to update the Mediterranean Diet but it is truly the gold standard diet. You did it. Congratulations! As you have followed our recommendations, and completed the i60 Challenge, you most likely have lost some weight and also notice less pain, bloating and tiredness while simultaneously experiencing more alertness and energy.
